Feel Lighter, Healthier and Restored: The Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage

At Balance & Restore Wellness, we’re committed to supporting your health from the inside out. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that Liane is now certified to deliver Complex Physical Therapy for the Assessment and Management of Lymphoedema, after completing advanced training through the Australian Institute of Lymphoedema.

As part of this, we now offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) therapy—an incredibly gentle, yet highly effective technique to support your body’s detoxification, reduce swelling, and promote overall wellbeing.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialised form of massage designed to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid through the body. The lymphatic system is a crucial part of your immune system, acting like a waste removal network for toxins, excess fluid, bacteria, and waste products. Unlike your blood circulation, which is powered by your heart, the lymphatic system relies on movement, breath, and manual stimulation to keep things flowing. When the system becomes sluggish or blocked, it can lead to fluid retention, swelling (oedema), fatigue, and even compromised immunity. MLD uses light, rhythmic strokes to encourage the natural drainage of lymph, helping the body eliminate waste and reduce inflammation.

Who Might Benefit from Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including: post-surgical clients (e.g. following cosmetic surgery, orthopaedic surgery or lymph node removal); people experiencing lymphoedema or chronic swelling; individuals suffering from bloating, fluid retention or sluggish digestion; those with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions; anyone looking to boost their immune system or support detoxification; and clients recovering from illness, travel or long periods of inactivity. It’s also incredibly relaxing—supporting your nervous system while reducing puffiness and discomfort.

How Is It Performed?

Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses light, feather-like strokes to gently stretch the skin in the direction of lymphatic flow. It’s non-invasive, soothing, and deeply calming. Treatments typically last between 60–75 minutes and may be combined with other modalities such as: compression garment fitting, lymphoedema bandaging, scar tissue therapy, or Clinical Pilates for post-surgery rehab. Your treatment will always be tailored to your needs and guided by Liane’s extensive experience and qualifications.
