Understanding Lymphoedema: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

At Pilates Connection, we are passionate about providing holistic wellness solutions to support your overall health and wellbeing. We are delighted to share some exciting news—our very own Liane has now achieved certification in ‘Complex Physical Therapy for the Assessment and Management of Lymphoedema’ after completing accreditation through the Australian Institute of Lymphoedema. This means we can now offer specialised treatment options right here in our studio’s treatment room!

But what exactly is Lymphoedema? Let’s explore its causes, symptoms, and treatment options, and how Pilates Connection can support you in managing this condition.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by an impaired lymphatic system, leading to swelling in parts of the body—most commonly the arms and legs. It occurs when the lymph fluid, which carries waste and immune cells, does not drain properly and accumulates in the tissues.

Lymphoedema can develop due to a variety of reasons, and while it cannot be completely cured, effective management can significantly improve quality of life.

Causes of Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is generally classified into two types:

  1. Primary Lymphoedema – A rare genetic condition where the lymphatic system does not develop properly. It can occur at birth, during puberty, or later in adulthood.
  2. Secondary Lymphoedema – More common and caused by damage to the lymphatic system, often due to:
    • Cancer treatments such as radiation or lymph node removal
    • Surgery or trauma affecting the lymphatic system
    • Infection
    • Obesity or chronic venous insufficiency

Symptoms of Lymphoedema

The symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Swelling in the limbs (arms, legs, hands, or feet)
  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Reduced mobility or flexibility
  • Hardening or thickening of the skin
  • Recurrent infections in the affected area
  • Discomfort or aching sensations

Early detection and intervention are key in preventing the condition from worsening.

Treatment and Management Options

While there is no definitive cure for Lymphoedema, various treatments can help manage symptoms effectively. We are thrilled to now offer the following specialised services at Pilates Connection:

1. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Massage
A gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate lymphatic flow, helping to reduce swelling and improve circulation.

2. Bandaging & Compression Therapy
Compression bandages and garments help maintain lymphatic drainage and prevent fluid build-up.

3. Exercise and Movement Therapy
Gentle exercises, such as Pilates, can support lymphatic flow, improve strength, and enhance mobility.
